“…if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules.” (2 Timothy 2:5)

It is the goal and mission of the St. Nicholas Athletics ministry to:

· conduct recreational and athletic activities in a way that will foster the development of the all-around character of each individual participant

· contribute to the increasing and continual attendance in the Church, and in youth programs.

While we want our participants to enjoy healthy competition, we do not want great emphasis placed on just winning and losing an athletic event. The importance of athletics is not whether one wins or loses, but rather the camaraderie it provides the players, parents and parishes.

St. Nicholas has a long tradition of excellence throughout our history in athletics, especially basketball. Affirmation of those many accomplishments is displayed in the trophy cases, flanking each side of the doors of the Dr. Mary Dochios-Kamberos Community Center.

Remember that the reason children play sports is to have fun, make new friends and learn new skills. Encourage our young players to have fun and keep sports in its proper perspective.

· Respect and show appreciation for the coaches and understand that they have volunteered their time to serve as a coach in order to give your child the opportunity to learn about and play basketball.

· Set an example of good sportsmanship at all times, even as spectators. Show respect for all involved in the game including coaches, players, opponents, fans and referees.

· Refrain from yelling out instructions to your children or other players on the team during a game.  That is the coach’s job. Limit your comments to encouraging your child and other players for both teams.

· Do not dispute, berate, ridicule or confront referees about their calls during games. Respect their decisions and encourage your child and all participants to do the same. Understand that referees are human and may occasionally make a mistake.

· Do not use profanity, or taunt/harass players, coaches, referees or other fans. Never leave the stands, or come out onto the playing floor, to dispute a call or play.

· After the game, thank the referees and coaches for their efforts.

· Congratulate and continue to encourage your child regardless of the outcome of the game or how they played.

· Remember that we should, at all times, act in a manner that is befitting of an Orthodox Christian.
